Real transformation is rarely loud. It grows where beauty is noticed.

Are You Nuanced, Too?

The best and most alive communities — the ones with vibrant ideas that seem to just organically flourish, seem to be centered around one idea.

This idea can be about spirituality, hobby interests, or even a philosophical interest. It is the “glue” of that community. I wish the same for Nuanced Therapist Network.

But how do you organize around Nuance? Nuance itself is multilayered, complex and constantly shifting due to its very nature. It’s capacity for holding the mysterious and unknown does not lend itself to an organizing principle.

In my contemplations around this, I keep coming back to the original Holding Space meetings that invited NTN to arise into being. We created them after the election in 2024, initially to look at how our neutrality around the election results, might be discordant to our clients’ passionate and fervent opposite views, and how to hold space for that.

Then they evolved into process and thought groups, after Charlie Kirk’s death in September of 2025. They were vulnerable, raw, and also filled with laughter and insight.

We deepen our sense of solidarity against Ideological capture, and also cultivate and hold fast to a deep hope that this phase is like others in history, where Integrity prevailed due to the impassioned people who come together to preserve it.

Inevitably, and quite powerfully, they always closed with an intense feeling of gratitude for being centered around hope and possibility — even in the face of what we have been persuaded to feel is hopeless. There is something inherently anxiety-generating that can lead to despair when you are silenced.

The censorship, I think, is designed to do this. It isolates us, and fills us with a lack of vision for the future. I don’t think this is conscious on the part of the censor — they just want the different idea to be quieted. But, it is the result nonetheless, for those of us who have been on the outside of this great and monstrous movement in our beloved field.

When it divided us, it had no way of knowing that we would come back ten times as strong. Organizations like CTA and OTI have formed, and are beginning to offer trainings that go deeper into the implications of ideological and political capture, and in those groups we find colleagues who are craving reality after years of gaslighting.

Until now, we have not had a place to gather around the fire and recount the war stories of the day. Lionel Shriver said recently, that we must preserve our incredulousness at what has happened — because we hold onto our sense of reality this way.

There is a place for silliness in NTN. The group with help you share you incredulousness, and laugh with you at the absurdities, as well as the tragedies in our field. For example, we have a space to share the incredibly absurd workshops, posts and offerings that our fellow captured therapists offer for this reason. When you stumble across a FB request for a “polyculed, demi-sexual, non-monogamous, polyamorous, furry able-bodied, neurodiverse BIPOC therapist who supports abortion” to treat a “Neurodiverse, disabled, middle class, BIPOC, non-binary, client with kink fetish”, and realize, not parody — a real request. You simply have to share it — because if not, we would all go insane.

I am beginning to believe — and see more and more — that there is actually a majority of us. The amount of feedback and requests I get as a supervisor offering non-ideological supervision tells me that there are many, many more like you and me. You see through this painful blip in our field, and crave a shared vision to move beyond it.

NTN is that place, to cultivate hope, to create a shared vision, and even a movement to sustain us as we await the inevitable transformation of psychology back to a field filled with integrity, with excellent training and clinical skills that help clients transform. We deepen our sense of solidarity against capture, and also cultivate and hold fast to a deep hope that this phase is like others in history, where the integrity prevailed due to the impassioned people who come together to preserve it.

What this looks like in NTN:

  • Forum spaces to share views, thoughts musing on various topics.

  • Regular monthly consultation or process groups for therapists.

  • Supervision group starting for five states, and hope to add more so that associates can finally access ideology-free supervision and not have to compromise their soul to get their hours.

  • Live events and trainings (topics like spirituality, clinical neutrality, meaning making, DBT) :

    • Live meditation group weekly.

    • Book club

    • Art Therapy

    • Clinical trainings by the experts in our group and the larger community of free thinking therapists.

This is the place we have all been waiting for, where we can finally return to being ourselves — with the real questions — the reality based ideas and inspirations to bring to a community of therapists who think.

Our goal is not small. It is to be the light in the darkness — and to cultivate a roaring flame of hope in each of us through friendship, insight and play.
